We are pleased to announce that Sam Riley has joined as a volunteer Heritage Advisor. A warm welcome to Mel who brings with him a wealth of experience working in the English Heritage sector.
Sam grew up in Ravenstone, where his passion for old buildings and historic places began. Sam has an undergraduate degree in English Literature and master’s degree in Building History, both undertaken at the University of Cambridge. He is currently enrolled on the MSc conversion degree in Building Surveying at the University of the Built Environment, accredited by the RICS and CIOB. Sam is a Full member of the Institute for Historic Buildings Conservation (IHBC) and sits on the committee for the East of England IHBC Branch.
Sam has broad experience of both conservation management and heritage planning across a wide variety of areas, building types and ages, from medieval barns and houses to twentieth century educational and civic buildings. His project and academic experience includes ecclesiastical buildings, country estates, industrial architecture, agricultural buildings, polite and vernacular domestic architecture, retail buildings, and both urban and rural conservation areas. As well as involvement with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), Sam volunteers as a condition surveyor and building illustrator for English Heritage. He is also an active member and organiser of the Lime Finishes Group, which brings together trades and professionals in heritage to scrutinise the evidence for existing and lost lime finishes on historic buildings
